Local guides can take visitors through the cave on bamboo rafts and lead them to three higher caverns, one of which contains the remains of prehistoric teak log coffins. Every evening after sunset hundreds of thousands of cave-adapted swifts fly into the downstream entrance to nest for the night as the cave's bats leave for nocturnal feeding.

A geologist in the Cave of Crystals (Cueva de los Cristales) in Naica Mine, Chihuahua, Mexico. The crystals are the largest known in the world, and are formed of the selenite form of gypsum (calcium sulphate). They formed over millions of years in the mineral-rich geothermally heated water that filled the caves. The crystals were discovered after the water was pumped out of the mine. The Cave of Crystals is 950 feet deep, and was discovered in 2000.

A brave photographer risked his life venturing into a cave below a glacier in Juneau, Alaska, to capture these scenes, which look like something from the Ice Age. Jonathan Tucker trudged through swamps and up a mountain for more than two hours to reach the frozen site 5,100 feet above sea level. Tucker was only able to walk underneath for around 30 yards before the icicle-covered ceiling became too low for him to continue.

Looking like a beautiful starry night sky, glow worms light a cave 150 feet underground. The limestone caves in Waitomo, New Zealand, are home to hundreds of thousands of glowworms, which light up the pitch black caves like bright blue stars. The caves, which are thought to be 30 million years old, were only discovered in the 1940s, and were previously thought to be just Maori legend.
