Unpublished photos of US troops
invading Saipan:
thousand who jumped off the cliffs at Marpi Point<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDUy0uzmaU4>, many documented by US combat photographers.
This may have influenced Truman's decision to use the bomb. If you apply Saipan's example to a conventional land invasion of the Japanese home islands, assuming 70% of 80 million Japanese would die, that's 56 million dead. That makes the 250,000 killed in the atom bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end the war look like a bargain for everyone.
